Following the launch of the 2020 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid models, Toyota is adding a third variant to the lineup with the announcement of the 2020 RAV4 Plug-in which will debut at the 2019 LA Auto Show next than focusing purely on the fuel economy benefits of the current RAV4 Hybrid, Toyota has chosen to also emphasize the performance advantages of the electrified variant, which is more powerful, slightly faster and a more enjoyable drive than the non-hybrid. It's an interesting strategy that Toyota claims is responsible for a 150-percent increase in RAV4 Hybrid model sales over the previous announcement teases a yet greener and potentially meaner model to come, with Toyota claiming the 2020 RAV4 Plug-in "will become the most powerful RAV4 yet."The PHEV formula of adding a larger battery pack and a charging port should net the RAV4 a bit of purely electric range which would, in turn, help the plug-in best the current hybrid's 41 city, 38 highway and 40 combined mpg estimates. A reserver of power may also allow Toyota to coax a few more kilowatts out of one (or both) of the plug-in's two electric motors, topping the current hybrid's 219 ponies in the process. Specs and numbers, however, have not yet been announced, so we're left speculating until the new model debuts in LA. Car typeElectric rangeFuel economyCO2 emissionsPlug-in hybrid46 miles282mpg22g/kmThe Toyota RAV4 opened the worldâs eyes to the idea of a compact and urban-friendly SUV way back in 1994 â long before the Nissan Qashqai or Volkswagen Tiguan arrived in the UK. Since then, Toyota has sold almost 230,000 examples â with the latest, fifth-generation version on sale since 2019. To widen its appeal and prepare for a zero-emission future, Toyota has now launched the very first RAV4 Plug-In numbers â from price, through to power and performance â arenât exactly what you'd expect from a Toyota. This is a family SUV with a petrol engine and an battery. Itâs got 302bhp and a 0-62mph time of just six seconds. Itâll do 46 miles on electricity at speeds of up to 84mph and emits just 22g/km of CO2 â putting it in one of the very lowest company-car tax bands. Charge it regularly and Toyota says itâll do 282mpg fuel economyThe catch? Prices start from around ÂŁ46,500. But obviously thereâs more to a car than how much it costs to buy. After all, most people will stick down a modest deposit, pay the fixed monthly PCP payment, and hand it back after three years. Whatâs important is whether this RAV4 plug-in hybrid can justify those figures, and whether itâs objectively a better car than a Ford Kuga or Peugeot 3008 â or even a Volvo answer, unfortunately, isnât all that straightforward. Itâs quiet, comfortable, and practical, comes loaded with kit, and offers the longest pure-electric range in the segment. But on the flip side, itâs faster than it has any need to be, isnât much fun to drive, and is still plagued by a laggy and unresponsive infotainment system. Quality is fine, but perhaps not befitting of its sky-high price; premium rivals from BMW, Audi and Volvo cost a similar amount, but feel more luxurious the Toyota RAV4 plug-in may be a good car in its own right, that price is going to be a significant sticking point for many potential customers. While weâre maybe not comparing apples with apples, itâs hard to ignore the fact that you can get a Ford Kuga or Peugeot 3008 with a plug-in powertrain for ÂŁ10,000 less; these models also come in under the ÂŁ40,000 threshold for lower road tax. That said, if you can run one as a company car and charge on a regular basis, the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid could be a really satisfying car to live with.
